English Bulldog History
The English bulldog has a very different temperament from those of his ancestors. The bulldog is descended from the ancient Asiatic mastiff, but its development took place in Great Britain. There is a medieval origin in the name "Bulldog", which refers to the robust look of a bull but also the power in which this dog breed attacked bulls in the area.
English Bulldog's Appearance
The Bulldog is known to be small in height but very wide and compact. The Bulldog has a wide massive head and a very large mouth. The skin on the Bulldog should fall in folds especially around the skull and forehead. The muzzle is short and the nose is broad with large nostrils. The lower jaw on the mouth should be undershot. The eyes are very round and very dark. They are also wide set. The ears are small and thin, and the tail is carried low and is short.
The coat comes in various colors such as, red, fawn, brindle, pale yellow or washed-out red, or white, and can combine any of these colors. Black is not acceptable. The bulldog has stocky legs set squarely at each corner of its compact body, the Bulldog is also known for its waddle.
The English Bulldog can be seen as intimidating to some, but they are well known to be the gentlest of all dogs. Yet if an intruder approaches the bulldog can make sure they leave and leave quickly. They are very brave, affectionate, and dependable as well. They are very gentle with children and are very courageous. They love the attention of humans and are very persistent.
The bulldog needs lots of attention to be happy and secure. They also tend to be a bit dominating, and can become a bit scrappy with other strange dogs if not well socialized. As puppies they are full of life and love to play, and as they age they tend to become increasingly slower and lazier. They are all around a great dog breed!
